Black and White Tuesday

I'm a big advocate of personal photography projects. They force you to engage, create and improve as a photographer. I have a few small projects that are on-going but wanted to try something that I could share on my blog on a weekly basis. I've noticed that my friend Ann Torrence is doing Black and White Tuesday on her blog. I've been getting into shooting more and more personal work in Black and White and thought this would be a good project for me to start as well. Be sure to check back on Tuesday's for fresh Black and White photo.

Project[52] - fifty one

My wife and I sat through regional swimming competition for my daughter last Saturday. I enjoy watching her do the breast stroke, it takes a lot of coordination. I was able to time it just right as she brought her elbows together lifting her up out of the water to start another stroke.

'N' contacted me a few weeks ago to see if I'd be willing to photograph her son's 2nd birthday party, I of course said yes. They were also celebrating their anniversary so they reserved a reception hall and invited all their friends. I had a great time with them and their friends. I took this photograph at the end of the party, it turns out it's one of my favorite from the evening.

My wife has a difficult time shopping for me at Christmas time.  I had asked for a few books and magazines related to photography (I told her which ones) but she was able to pull off a big surprise this year with an iPad 2.  I have quite a few eBooks that I've been wanting to read and find it hard to do on my MacBook Pro.  Since Christmas I've finished two books and have a few more to go.  So far I'm liking the iPad 2 and have a few projects in mind for this year that will involve it.

Project[52] – forty seven

I'm finally caught up on my posts for my Project[52], with five weeks left I can say it's been a fun project.  My wife and I put a twist on decorating our gingerbread house this year.  Her and I had a competition against our daughters to see who could come up the most creative design.  We of course thought we did and they liked theirs(below) better so it came out as a tie.  We will have to settle it next year.  In case you missed it, the piece of gingerbread under the front tire is Mr. Snowman's head.  His body is at the far left and the poor family didn't survive.  If they had been wearing their seat belt it may have turned out for the better.

We've had our fair share of fog/smog this month in Northern Utah.  The fog was particular think in a field near my office and made for some interesting patterns on the tall field grass.

Playing around with my macro lens and a ring flash.  I found it difficult to get the ring flash centered in the pupil.  By the time I would lock in my focus and fire the flash the pupil had changed size.  I photographed my two daughters and a friend and liked the orange color of my middle daughter the best.  I've never realized just how much orange she has in her eyes.

Project[52] - forty three

Without getting into too much detail this accident involved a family member that walked away without a scratch after falling asleep at the wheel.  The car was less than a year old and was totalled after hitting a wooden bridge.  I have made it a habit to have my small camera bag with me at all times that has two cameras in it, a Canon 5DMII & Fuji X100.  I was glad to have it this day as we arrived at the scene just minutes after this happened.  I of course have my iPhone with me too but prefer the quality of these two cameras better.

 

Project[52] - forty four

The Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad in 1944.  This was my second time photographing this train in Ogden Utah.  The first time I photographed it as it was parked at the Ogden Union Station.  I got some amazing shots you can see here.  This time I wanted to catch the train as it made it's way up interstate 84 to Evanston Wyoming.  We received a light dusting of snow a few days before so I wanted to have the snow capped mountains in the background.  It took a little searching but we found the perfect spot just a few feet away from the tracks.

There's something about rain, lights and reflections that catches my eye.  I had to pull over one morning on my way to work in the pouring rain to make this image.  Take the time to enjoy your surroundings.

I was able to take my daughter to Washington DC in October.  We were there for five days and wish we could have stayed ten.  It was fun to spend time with her and to see the things she is learning about in fifth grade.  I was impressed when she started reciting the constitution as we stood in front of it at the National Archives Museum.  I of course loved all the architecture and really enjoyed the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Project[52] – thirty nine

I had the pleasure of working with theses four girls this fall for a school themed stock photo shoot.  We went to a local park for a few hours and left with some great images.  They all did a great job and I"m happy to see the images selling from my portfolio.

I love those moments when you capture an expression that you weren't expecting.  It was a cool fall evening, the sun was fading fast so we were in a rush to get some good family moments.  Little "V" just went through a small meltdown and her dad was trying to console her.  I called her name and when she glanced up at me and I quickly captured this moment.  Turns out it was my favorite from the evening.

One of my favorite photos of my niece Kassidy taken at her baptism. This was taken with my new favorite camera the Fujifilm X100. It left my DSLR at home this weekend and was happy that I did.

I walk by this car just about everyday in the parking lot at work.  The tinker bell car seat covers catch my attention each time.  On this day I took a minute to photograph the dueling tinker bells.  As I was writing this post I noticed the matching steering wheel cover.  It wouldn't surprise me to see matching car mats as well.
