Weekend Getaway
Canon XTi * Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L Lens * ISO 100 * 1/800 second * f/4.0
My family and I stayed with some friends at East Canyon Resort this past weekend. The resort is nestled in the mountains between Park City and Morgan Utah.
The photo above was taken at the resort early one morning. While everyone was still sleeping I slipped out for a early morning walk and was able to get some great shots. This shot of the sign was one of them. I really like the direction the sun is hitting the snow, it really adds depth to the shadows.
We spent part of our Saturday morning at Soldier Hollow tubing hill. They claim their tubing hill has the longest tubing lanes in Utah. They had six lanes and two tow ropes that provided an easy way to get to the top of the hill. They also have cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. It’s a great place to take the family for a winter activity.
The photo below is of a guy kid who was brave enough to ski without a shirt. The semi-warm weather didn’t last long, within about 30 minutes the wind was blowing and was very cold; typical Utah winter.

Snow Shack
Canon XTi * Canon EF-24-105mm f/4.0 lens * ISO 100 * 1/1250 second * f/4.0
On my drive around Antelope Island State Park the other day this shack caught my eye. I probably wouldn't have given it much thought if the snow wasn't stuck to the side of the building. The night before we had a pretty good snow storm and by examining the photo you can tell that the the snow was horizontal for a while. The wind was still blowing when I took this photo and was drifting around the shack and on the road. It was certainly a day for taking pictures from the car. On my drive I saw quite a few jackrabbits, bison, hawks and a coyote. Antelope Island is a quick ten minute drive from my house and provides something new for me to photograph each time I visit.

October Snowman
This is Utah's Education Association (UEA) week, no school October 29th & 30th. With a four day weekend we packed up and headed to Wyoming. We take every opportunity possible to spend time at the family cabin in Star Valley Wyoming. It's a great place to get away from the daily distractions: Television, Telephone,
My daughter and I gathered up some snow left over from a snowstorm the week prior and made this

Snowcapped Mountains
Snowcapped Mountains, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.
Northern Utah received it's first major snow this past weekend. Several ski resorts have announced when they will be opening. Alta is the first to open November 15th.
Utah is known for great powder. One reason people keep coming back is the short distance to the resorts. A quick 30 - 45 minute drive will get you to just about any resort.
I plan on learning how to snowboard with my daughter this year. I'm not sure if my knees and backside can take the abuse.
