Farm Equipment

I grew up on a farm so I'm a sucker for tractors and farm equipment.  My favorite tractors are John Deere, I often joke that my blood is green due to all the hours I've spent behind the wheel of a John Deere.  I enjoy the pace and lifestyle of farming and would go back to it in a heart beat but my wife and I made the decision when we started a family that it would probably be best to pursue something more stable with a steady income.

I saw this tractor on my way to work one day and made a mental note to go back and photograph it when the lighting was better.  We've had our share of fog lately and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to set the tone for a cold winter's day.  -enjoy

Christmas at Temple Square

Last week was our fourth annual Photowalk at Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.  It was a very cold night but I was prepared and ready for the cold.  I've included a few of my favorites of the evening.  - enjoy

An Evening at the Lake

I live close to Antelope Island State Park that I like to visit often.  I took a quick drive out to the island a few weeks ago at sunset with my buddy Nate.  I've included a few of may favorite images from the evening.

Utah State Capitol

I upgraded my camera this week to a Canon 5d Mark II.  I haven't had much time to take some serious photos yet so yesterday I headed up to the state capitol building.  I am thrilled for the full frame sensor and the low light capabilities and of course the 21 megapixel goodness.

Rockin @ the Great Salt Lake

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Canon 40D * EF-24-105mm f/4.0L * ISO 100 * 1/60 seconds * f/5.0"]Canon 40D * EF-24-105mm f/4.0L * ISO 100 * 1/60 seconds * f/5.0[/caption]

A few of us got together Friday at Black Rock by the Great Salt Lake and did a little Rock Band photoshoot.  Nathan Marx organized the event and with the help of Rob Snow, Shane & Bekah we had our models.  Kudos to Rob for hauling his expensive drums out there, I have to say they look pretty awesome next to the lake.

I'm not sure what I will do with these images yet but I had a blast with Nathan, Ziggy & Rob.  You can see the rest of the photos here

Photography Merit Badge

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Canon 40D * EF-24-105mm f/4.0L * ISO 100 * 1/320 seconds * f/4.0"][/caption]

I was asked recently to work with 10 boys to help them earn their photography merit badge.  I've always looked up to the boy scout program, I received my Eagle on my 13th birthday and am grateful for that opportunity.  After spending about 40 minutes with the scouts about the techniques of photography they chose a project and off they went.  About a week later I caught up with two of the boys and found they hadn't worked on their project.  I invited them to go on a photowalk with me to the Ogden Utah Union Station.

They had such a great time they are wanting to do another photowalk.  My first photowalk was with Thomas Hawk in San Francisco.  I really like getting out for photowalks, it's a great way to improve your skills and just have fun.  I've included a few of my favorites from the walk, check out the full gallery here

Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844

A couple of weeks ago I had an opportunity to go see the Union Pacific's last steam engine that's in production in Ogden Utah.  The train was leaving Ogden heading to Nevada on a cross country journey.  I met a local photog (Ann Torrence) there who had made friends with Jim by the time I arrived.  He has photographed the train before and knew the route it was taking when it left Ogden.  He let us tag along with him for a couple of hours.  After the train left the station we all jumped in his car to see if we could get some more pictures of the train going over a local bridge.  As we pulled up to the bridge we barely made it across the road when it sped by going 70+ miles an hour.  Bill was determined to catch up and pass it so we all jumped in and headed to the last crossing before it headed over the causeway of the Salt Lake.  I was able to capture an image of it speeding along at 70+ miles an hour with a large steam cloud that I will be posting later this week, it turns out that it's one of my favorites of the day.

I've added some of my favorites photos below.  You can check out my high resolution gallery here.

Reflection

This capture is of downtown Salt Lake City on the Main Street Plaza. I opted for a shot from behind the Nativity Scene to show the hustle & bustle of the people and the busy-ness of the whole scene at Temple Square.

This capture is of downtown Salt Lake City on the Main Street Plaza Temple Square.  To get this capture I had to prop my tripod on a ledge and use my remote trigger.  My tripod doesn't  extend very high  or I would have been able get the full reflection.  I'm glad I have a full sized tripod under the Christmas tree this year.
